| I've loved every book in the Midnight Breed series, but Darker After Midnight just may be my favourite. There's an ominous darkness to this book with Stirling Chase battling bloodlust and almost lost to every code of honour he once upheld. His alienation from the Breeds and seemingly unstoppable descent into addiction, just at a time when Dragos has launched his campaign to destroy his people, provides for a tense and thrilling tale.
Chase has been an increasingly broken character for the past few books and it was about time he got to tell his own story. Luckily Tavia has almost as many problems as he does! And of course there are the bombings, attacks, murders, etc to keep things rolling along. One of the aspects that both interested, and also annoyed, me was that being number ten in the series, this book had a lot of characters to cover and plot threads to try and weave together. There is a very strong sense that this was to be the last book in the series, and so trying to pull everything together was important. Close to the end there was quite a change....and I can't help wondering if this was when Lara Adrian was contracted for further books in the series. The denouement was far too quick and so much was resolved too neatly. I presume this because the author was thinking of how some elements could be held over to future books but it did weaken the ending of what had been an engrossing and thrilling ride. This is absolutely a book where you needed to be familiar with existing plots and characters. If you've been following the series then this is a book you have to read. That said, so much was wrapped up that I can't see where future books will go. For me, this would have been a good place to end the series. |
