This is a very hard review to write, I want to tell you all about this great book, but without giving away ANY of the plot, as it is so originally written to give too many plot details would ruin the suspense and excitement of the story. We all know that fairytales aren’t complete myths, and legends aren’t always make-believe. But what would you do if you come face to face with the reality? Would you even recognise it? I didn’t at first and it was a delightful ‘ah-ha’ moment! An incredible adaptation and twisting of an ancient fairy-tale, Devoured managed to make me cry, laugh and almost gave me nightmares. I am thankful that Devoured is a ‘teen’ book. I would hate to think how the story would go if written for the ‘adult’ market. Moments of it are really quite grisly, but more in an implied manner. As an avid reader of some pretty horrid stuff (I do like my dark fantasy) there was the feeling of expectation building up, but the story never really crossed that line, so if you weren’t expecting something horrible and you live in the moment the story is telling it probably won’t seem quite so gruesome (obviously I have a ‘slightly’ over active imagination!). I did find the writing style a little strange at first as its written very first person with lots of “I said”, which you don’t normally find outside of high-school English class. Once you get past that and start to fall into Megan’s world and her train of thought it becomes quite enjoyable. Although it can still be a little jarring at times, it doesn’t distract too much from the wonderful story being woven. This is the third STAND ALONE book from Amanda Marrone, but the first one I have read. I will have to rectify my incredible oversight and read her earlier books, as they look just as intriguing and exciting as Devoured turned out to be. |
