Keri Arthur never disappoints, and Generation 18 is another example of the electrifying writing we’ve come to expect. The second book in the Urban Fantasy/Crime series Spook Squad is another exciting leap into the world of not quite human SIU Agent Samantha Ryan. Picking up where we were left off in Memory Zero, Sam is now partnered with Assistant Director (and member of the ‘Federation’) Gabriel Stern and he’s not happy about it. Sam’s developing abilities, her mystery man, and her increasing frustration, all in the midst of a series gruesome murders all make for another page turner. Whilst weaving in threads of the past and hints of the future into the story, we also need to stop a serial killer, and see where the relationship between Sam & Gabriel is going. Then there is the question of the military involvement... just what is project Generation 18, how does it affect Sam and why does it keep coming up in their investigations. I was a little disappointed that this book seemed to focus on Sam and Gabriel quite separately, but that’s all part of the evilness of Keri Arthurs writing, she seems to like leading her poor readers on a tantalising trek. What we got instead is an excellent crime story which gave some really fascinating glimpses into the past of both Gabriel and Sam. I love the conspiracy theories that get introduced. Who knows... it might just all be possible! |
