Rosie 2010-06-01

Riley Jensen is one of the most amazing characters in Urban Fantasy! Part werewolf, part vampire, part paranormal detective and all woman.

With Moon Sworn we come to the end of the Riley Jensen series – but PLEASE, make sure that you have read Bound to Shadows before Moon Sworn because these two books are strongly linked together.

In Bound to Shadows Riley faced dreadful danger and choices and it’s the legacy of these that give the pure emotional intensity of Moon Sworn. Prepare yourself to have your heart absolutely wrung dry as Riley tries to piece her life back together while also confronting murders, attacks and kidnapping.

One element I loved was the use of the isolation of the Australian Outback to mirror the sparse landscape of Riley’s mind when she finds herself abandoned with amnesia in the remote landscape. The absolute creepiness of the small town, her separation from the people who have been her mainstays throughout the series and her confusion over what is real and what is not, strip so much from her. What we are left with is Riley’s growing certainty of who she is and what matters deep inside.

Keri Arthur built layer upon layer throughout the series and now in this, the ninth book, she managed to pull the disparate parts together in a remarkable tour de force.  What stuns me is remembering back to themes that were in book one and recurred throughout the series, that finally come to the fore and are resolved. Quite remarkable.

As always, the writing is clear, the mysteries complex but logical and the emotional depth profound.

Much as I am sad that this series has ended, the conclusion of Moon Sworn was all I could ever have hoped for.
