| Another debut author who has taken life and turned it into a brilliant work of art! The first book from Seanan McGuire, Rosemary & Rue, is a wonderful blend of the familiar and the original. We’ve got a familiar feel to the story, we’ve got the Sidhe Courts, a little death and destruction and the blend of the mortal world. The entire novel is almost comfortable, there is a certain formula to it that readers of urban fantasy will most likely pick up. However, that’s also part of the devilish delight in reading this, you know that there is something shocking coming up, you just can’t guess what it could be – it’s almost like getting a small wrapped box for your birthday, you know it’s going to be something good, but just how good is it going to be! Obviously Patricia Briggs and Kim Harrison did a lot to shape my Urban Fantasy world, as I keep comparing everything else to them (in much the same manner as Tolkien is the standard in epic fantasy – yes, the comparison is deliberate!). I think readers who’ve enjoyed the writing style of these authors (and I’ll also add in Keri Arthur and Karen Chance into this mix) will really enjoy Seanan McGuire. The same sort of flow, the same sort of great characters, and the same great level of excitement – but a whole new twist on the world of changelings, half-bread and Sidhe. It is an exciting time to be a reader of Urban Fantasy. So many new ideas and new stories based on old themes. A great first novel, looking forward to seeing “A Local Habitation”, number 2 in the series in 2010, | ||
